ABOUT ERMYN LODGE
Welcome from Tony Smith
“It’s my pleasure to introduce you to Ermyn Lodge, in the heart of Epsom’s world-famous horse racing and training area, where we have introduced breeding and
sales preparation, the other essential elements of the thoroughbred world.
My wife Lesley and I have been closely involved with racehorses since 1975. We started as small shareholders before going into outright ownership, and then progressed to the breeding side with some of the fillies we raced. I was born in London and have lived in the area all my life. So when I retired after 35 years in the commercial moving business, principally with Ede’s (UK) Ltd, and decided to combine work and pleasure in racing and breeding, Epsom was the obvious place to start.
We purchased Ermyn Lodge in 2005 and spent three years building a new house, refurbishing the stables, improving the paddocks, preparing separate areas for
the breeding operation and acquiring some additional land to allow for the future expansion of this side of the business.
In fact, we began with the idea of just breeding horses and getting them ready either for the sales or to go into training, for ourselves and other people.
But we quickly realised there was a marvellous opportunity for Ermyn Lodge to do both – to train and to breed. Results have shown that we made the right decision.
At the beginning of December 2008, with Pat Phelan at the helm as trainer and breeding operations manager, the Ermyn Lodge staff of 12 had been responsible for 14 winners since Cactus King opened our account on 1 April 2007, as well as excellent results at the major bloodstock sales.
Winners have come from all directions – from 2-y-o races to bumpers, from 5 furlongs to middle distances, and under both codes. Ede’s won 5 jump races from 6 outings and Epsom Salts rattled up a hat trick on the flat in a three week spell. Two 2-y-o winners, Young Dottie and Leadenhall Lass have come from four runners with Young Dottie setting the fastest time for a juvenile over 7 furlongs at Lingfield – all these in 2008.
It’s been hard work but great fun, and we want other people to enjoy the Ermyn Lodge experience. The rest of the web site will explain what we have to offer.
We look forward to hearing from you. If you would like to be involved with a horse in training, or have a mare to board or a horse to prepare for the sales, we believe Ermyn Lodge is the place for you.”
"From start to finish, we guarantee you a warm welcome and personal service."
